We want to make this year’s All Wales Scout Camp the greenest ever and part of achieving that objective will be setting a target to reduce the waste stream generated at the Camp in 2022.
On-site waste management will once again deploy on-site waste collection that will require all Troops to manage their waste and comply with the Waste Management rules and targets for the camp.
You can download the Waste Management Plan here.
To succeed we need everyone attending this year’s camp to play their part by:
• By thinking about what they need to bring to camp that will end up in the waste stream.
• Minimising the amount of waste, we generate
• Maximising the amount of that waste we recycle
• Comply with the camp rules on waste handling and recycling of waste.
Pre-Camp Planning for Reduction.
To achieve this objective, we need to start thinking about reducing the waste we generate at camp and how we can recycle more of that waste before we arrive on camp by:
• Thinking about what we are bringing camp and how that is packaged.
• Eradicating any single use plastics. The following are defined as single use plastics under the Act.
• Single-use plastic plates – this includes paper plates with a laminated plastic surface.
• Single-use plastic cutlery – for example forks, spoons, knives
• Single-use plastic drinks stirrers • Cups made of expanded or foamed extruded polystyrene.
• Takeaway food containers made of expanded or foamed extruded polystyrene.
• Single-use plastic balloon sticks
• Single-use plastic-stemmed Cotton buds
• Single-use plastic drinking straws – with exemptions so people who need them to eat and drink safely and independently can continue to have them.
• Building the camp waste and recycling policy into your programme
• Being aware of the requirements and ensuring you arrive on site ready to play your part.
At this year’s camp we will have the same structured approach to our waste management as in 2022 working with a private sector company. Having entered a contract with this company it is imperative that the waste we generate and deliver to them for collection is segregated to their specification.
To ensure that goal the Site Services Team will be undertaking waste collection. There will be no waste skips on the camp site and all waste must be segregated and bagged for collection at your camp site as per the guide.
These collections will take place:
• Saturday 15 June – during the morning activity session.
• Saturday 15 June – during the evening activity session
• Sunday 16 June – afternoon following departure of troops.
We will be providing clear plastic sacks for recyclables and green compostable bags for solid food waste. Grey water waste is to be disposed of at the identified grey wastewater points on the camp site. Grey water waste must not be disposed of at the toilet block facilities.
You will be asked to provide your own black bags for residual waste and a plastic bucket in which to place solid food waste bags for collection.
Your waste must be segregated and bagged as follows:
Clear Plastic Bags:
• Plastic and Cans: Clean food & drink cans Aluminium foil clean plastic bottles (Rinsed, squashed, lids removed) Plastic bottle tops & lids Metal bottle tops & jar lids Aerosol cans clean plastic food trays clean pot & tubs.
• Paper and Card: Newspapers & magazines Shredded. Flattened cereal boxes & other card Brown card and paper.
Green Food Waste Bags:
• Solid Food Waste: Leftover cooked & raw food including Meat, fish and bones Cheese Vegetables & fruit Eggshells Bread, cakes, pastries Cereals Rice, pasta & beans Tea bags & coffee grounds.
Black Bags:
• Residual waste: soiled wrappings, and paper and non-recyclables
We cannot handle any glass in the waste on site. Any glass brought to camp must be taken home by your group.
If your waste is not segregated and bagged as above the Site Services Team will leave it on your site and you will be asked to sort it as per the above requirements.
Please note that you must not bring to camp any single use plastics as defined above as these are now illegal in Wales and cannot be included in our waste stream.
Vapes must not be disposed of in the waste stream, that includes black bags.
Please note that waste not specified above such as clothing, footwear, broken tents, broken camp chairs, cookers, empty gas canisters or any other camp or general equipment must not be placed in the above or left on site but taken home with you.
