Helping young people in Wales find their voice

This challenge helps young people explore the democratic processes of their section, local community and nationally across Wales. It explores how to find your voice and express your opinion, crucial when building skills for life.

To achieve the badge, each young person will need to complete all the listed activities for their age group using the Electoral Commission’s resources.

The badge can be ordered from ScoutsCymru Headquarters by Badge Secretaries or section Leaders by emailing admin@scoutscymru.org.uk The badge should be worn on uniform as an occasional badge.

Eligibility Criteria for Democracy Challenge Badge Funding

ScoutsCymru is pleased to announce the availability of funding to support group activities that help young people aged 14-18 achieve their Democracy Challenge Badge. To ensure a fair and efficient allocation of funds, please review the following eligibility criteria before applying.

  1. Eligible Applicants:
  • Scouts and Explorers Groups: Only Scouts and Explorer groups are eligible to apply.
  • Age Group: The funding is specifically targeted at activities for young people aged 14-18.
  1. Eligible Activities:
  • Meetings with Local Representatives: Activities must include meetings with local representatives such as Members of Parliament (MPs), Members of the Senedd (MSs), or Local Councillors.
  • Government Building Visits: Activities should include visits to government buildings to provide participants with firsthand experience of the democratic process.
  • Educational and Civic Engagement Activities: Any other activities directly related to the Democracy Challenge Badge requirements.
  1. Funding Allocation:
  • Needs-Based Assessment: Funding amounts will be determined based on the specific needs of the group and the type of activity planned.
  • Partial Funding: Groups may receive partial funding based on the availability of funds and the number of applications received.
  1. Application Requirements:
  • Completed Application Form: Groups must submit a fully completed funding request form.
  • Detailed Budget Breakdown: Applications must include an itemised budget detailing the estimated costs of the activities.
  • Proposed Timeline: Groups must provide proposed dates or timeframes for the planned activities. All activities must take place by 31st March 2025.
  1. Evaluation Criteria:
  • Alignment with Badge Requirements: Activities must align with the requirements of the Democracy Challenge Badge.
  • Impact on Participants: The potential impact on the participants and how the activities will help them achieve the badge.
  • Feasibility and Planning: The feasibility of the proposed activities and the thoroughness of the planning process.
  1. Additional Information:
  • Support from ScoutsCymru: ScoutsCymru will support local groups in arranging meetings with representatives and visits to government buildings.
  • Funding Availability: The funding window will remain open until the allocated funds have been exhausted. Early application is encouraged to ensure access to funds.
