Jamie, Youth Lead, Pembrokeshire

Jamie has been part of Scouting since he was a Beaver, with some of his favourite memories coming from a trip to the Kent International Jamboree 2017 as a Scout. Jamie may only be 18 but he volunteers with 1st Narberth’s Beavers, Cubs and Scouts as well as being the Youth Lead for Pembrokeshire. He is busy!

Volunteering for love not money

Jamie started his volunteering with the Scouts to give back the skills and experience he learnt as a young person from Beavers through to Explorers. Jamie admits, “I didn’t realise leaders were volunteers until I was a Scout.” This motivated him to leap into becoming an adult volunteer in Scouting.

Championing the voice of young people.

Jamie holds various roles in Scouting, but his main role is Youth Lead for Pembrokeshire. This role is about ensuring the voices of young people across Pembrokeshire are listened to throughout all levels of Scouting. He also supports local groups across the county to make sure their sessions are being led and shaped by the young people.

Making a change to young people lives

Everyone has their reason for volunteering, Jamie enjoys making a positive impact on young people’s lives. Jamie explains “I love seeing the growth in young people as well as giving them a voice across the area.”

Enthusiastic and knowledgeable young people, make it all worthwhile

Throughout his time as a volunteer, Jamie has noticed and been inspired by how enthusiastic and knowledgeable the young people are and how much they give to Scouting.

You learn so much from the young people you work with

Jamie has volunteered in multiple roles, so he is well qualified to pass on tips to anyone considering volunteering. His advice is, “Absolutely go for it. There’s so much you can give to young people but there is so much you can also learn from them. For me I have learnt and grown skills in camping and planning, plus how to best listen and support our young people.”

There are many ways you can get involved in Scouts. Empowering our young people to shape their journey is at the centre of everything we do. So why not get involved and support the voice of young people in Scouting? Get involved today.
