As part of our Change Makers | Dyfodol Disglair spotlight series celebrating inspirational young people across the Scouting family, we couldnโt let April go without shining a light on Rhu!
Back in February, Area Lead Volunteer for Cardiff and the Vale, Cathie Steele, presented Rupert Williams, or Rhu to his friends, a Beaver Scout from 1st Barry, with the Chief Scoutโs Commendation for Meritorious Conduct.
Last weekend, Rhu and his family travelled to Windsor Castle for the Scoutsโ Day of Celebration and Achievement and we think his smile says it all!
Rhu got to meet so many people including Dwayne Fields, Chief Volunteer and astronaut Tim Peake, which made the day even more special.
But the bit that really matters is why he was there.
โIn recognition of their remarkable commitment to Scouts, demonstrated through continued involvement despite severe illnessโ
Thatโs not about one moment but about turning up, again and again, when it would be easier not to. And thatโs why these matters and why we wanted to highlight Rhu as part of our Change Makers | Dyfodol Disglair series.
Because this is what Scouting does at its best – it gives young people something steady. Somewhere theyโre expected, included, and part of something, whatever else is going on in their lives.
As Jon, our Chief Volunteer for Wales, put it after meeting Rhu at Windsor:
โRhuโs story is a powerful reminder of what young people can achieve when they feel supported and included. His commitment to Scouts, despite serious illness, is exceptional. It was a privilege to meet him at Windsor and see that recognised.โ
Rhu had a great day and showed what determination actually looks like – Quiet, consistent, and properly inspiring!
