Young people from Buckley St Matthew Beaver Scouts have joined forces with Marley Field Care Home to help to save songbirds this winter.

Children and residents worked together to help Flintshire’s beautiful songbirds to get through the tough winter months by taking part in a charity challenge.

The challenge really bridged the gap between the generations. Encouraging young people to connect with the wider community nurtures communication and builds confidence. It’s all part of creating skills for life and we love hearing about young people across Wales doing activities out and about in the community.

Beavers help to save songbirds in decline

The session with Marley Field Care Home was part of The Ruby Robin Award, set up by charity SongBird Survival to inspire the next generation to protect songbirds. More than half of UK songbirds are threatened or already in decline.

The session was perfect for young Scouts and included crafting DIY feeders for their gardens, learning fun facts about birds and spending time outdoors spotting birds. What a lovely opportunity to make great memories, have fun and learn about songbirds.

Get involved with Scouts in Wales

Taking young people to a care home as an activity is a great example of our how we strive to embed the importance of community service in the skills and values we teach young people in Scouting. This is only possible with the support of a good team of helpers. If you think you could lend a hand to support Beavers or any of our Scouting sections in Wales, we’d love to hear from you.
