ScoutsCymru has paid tribute to long-serving volunteer Trustee, Edward Watts, who attended his final Board of Trustees meeting last weekend (November 2025). Edward, who lives in Newport, holds the Silver Wolf, the highest accolade an adult volunteer in Scouting can receive, awarded only for services of the most exceptional nature.
A familiar and highly respected figure across Scouting in Wales, Edward is the Area Chair for Gwent Scouts and has held multiple trustee roles on the ScoutsCymru Board. His Scouting journey began with 29th Newport, where he served as a Group Venture Scout Leader (now Explorer Scouts) and where he still maintains close links.
As he stepped down from the Board of Trustees, Edward shared a reflection on the progress and purpose he has witnessed throughout his time in Scouting:
“I’ve watched Scouting in Wales follow a real pathway of achievement, driven by people who care deeply about giving young people the best possible start. Everything that’s been achieved is down to the commitment of the people around this table, and those who laid the groundwork before them. I’m grateful to have been part of that journey, to have learned so much and to have seen first-hand that the board always puts what’s best for Scouting in Wales at the very top of its agenda.”
Jon Williams, Chief Volunteer for Wales, shared his thanks on behalf of the movement:
“Edward’s contribution to Scouting in Wales is remarkable. His steady leadership, insight and unwavering commitment have shaped decisions, supported volunteers and strengthened the experiences we offer young people. He brings wisdom without ego, challenge without hesitation and encouragement without fail. We are incredibly grateful for everything he has given to Scouting over so many decades, and his influence will continue to be felt long after his time on the board.”
Edward’s passion for service extends far beyond Scouting. He is a school governor in Newport, has volunteered with the Newport Mission to Seafarers for over 50 years including more than 20 as Chair and also serves as Chair of GAVO and as a Trustee of WCVA. His commitment to the third sector has been recognised locally with an MBE and through his appointment as Deputy Lieutenant of Gwent.
As Edward’s tenure on the ScoutsCymru Board comes to an end, the organisation marks the moment with much appreciation for the insight and steady guidance he has brought, while recognising that his ongoing volunteering will continue to make a meaningful difference to Scouting in Wales.
