A group of Explorer Scouts from across Wales has set off on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to Bavaria, thanks to funding from Taith, the Welsh Government’s international learning exchange programme.
The trip, which got underway this weekend with a send-off barbecue, will see the young people spend up to two weeks exploring Bavaria alongside local Bavarian Rover Scouts as they work towards their Explorer Belt Award, one of the highest international accolades in Scouting.
To earn the Award, Explorer Scouts must plan, arrange and take part in a challenging expedition that promotes teamwork, personal development and cultural understanding. In true Scouting spirit, the young people have helped shape the route, activities and logistics and will lead the whole trip as part of the leadership and planning experience.
This experience is designed to remove barriers and open up opportunities. As well as covering the full cost of the trip, the programme offers additional support for young people who may face challenges such as access needs, disabilities or financial constraints around kit and travel documentation.
The Wales Scouts team will be hosted by Bavarian Rover Scouts, immersing themselves in local customs, food, and traditions. In return, they’ll welcome their German counterparts to Wales in 2026, creating a meaningful cultural exchange and lasting friendships.
Steve Jones, International Lead Volunteer, said:
“This trip is a chance for young people to grow in confidence, experience new cultures, and take the lead in shaping their own adventure. We’re incredibly grateful to Taith for making it possible, and we look forward to sharing their stories when they return.”
