Beavers from 1st Menai Bridge Scout Group recently embarked on an unforgettable international adventure as part of their International Activity Badge, transforming their Scout Hut into a fully functioning airport, aeroplane and international destination!
The journey began with the Beavers becoming travel agents for the evening. They researched destinations from around the world, exploring climates, activities and famous landmarks before casting their votes on where they wanted to visit. After much debate, one destination came out on top… Japan!
Before setting off, our young travellers had an important challenge. Could they pack the right items for different trips? Working in teams, they decided what to take for tropical beaches, snowy mountains, city breaks and even safaris. Some packing choices were more sensible than others, and thankfully nobody packed a snorkel for the Arctic!
The Beavers then created their own passports, complete with photographs and traveller details, ready for departure.
The following week, excitement levels went through the roof as the Scout Hut was transformed into the departure lounge for “Ynys Môn Airlines”. Beavers checked in for their flight, navigated passport control and learned what is and isn’t allowed in hand luggage. After locating the correct boarding passes and gates, passengers boarded their aircraft and settled in for take-off.
No airline experience would be complete without a safety briefing, and our cabin crew made sure everyone knew exactly what to do before departure. The Beavers exchanged their currency, prepared for international travel and then took to the skies on their flight to Japan – and yes, they even enjoyed some inflight refreshments!
The final stage of the adventure saw our travellers land safely in Japan, where they were immersed in Japanese culture. They learned the art of origami, made their own sushi, wrote postcards home describing their adventures and collected passport stamps or ‘Eki stamps’ along the way.
To mark the successful completion of their journey, every Beaver received an International Traveller Certificate, proving they had successfully travelled halfway around the world without ever leaving Menai Bridge!
Alongside all the fun and excitement, the Beavers were also developing valuable skills including teamwork, communication, decision-making and an understanding of different cultures and traditions around the world.
One thing is certain: if future flights with “Ynys Môn Airlines” are anything like this one, tickets are going to be in very high demand!
