Y mis Medi hwn, mae’r Squirrels yn troi’n bump oed – ac yn ScoutsCymru rydyn ni’n dathlu gyda rhywbeth arbennig iawn i’n Scouts ieuengaf yng Nghymru.

This September, Squirrels are turning five – and at ScoutsCymru we’re celebrating with something very special for our youngest Scouts in Wales.

Am y tro cyntaf, rydyn ni’n lansio Llyfr Caneuon y Squirrels, sy’n cynnwys 11 cân i Squirrels ganu, symud a chael hwyl gyda’i gilydd.

O Squirrels yn Wiglo a Squirrels Bychan i Gwna dy Orau Glas, Y Gân Neidio a Cân Diolch, mae’r caneuon yn cwmpasu popeth sy’n gwneud bod yn Squirrel yn gymaint o hwyl – gwneud ffrindiau, helpu eraill, perthyn, chwarae, archwilio ac, yn y pen draw, symud ymlaen i’r antur nesaf gyda’r Beavers.

Ond mae’r prosiect hwn wedi bod yn llawer mwy na dim ond cyfieithu geiriau Saesneg i’r Gymraeg.

Ysgrifennwyd y geiriau gwreiddiol a’r gerddoriaeth gan Chris James, gyda Branwen Gwyn yn creu’r addasiadau newydd yn y Gymraeg. Mae Branwen wedi addasu’r caneuon yn ofalus fel bod y Gymraeg yn naturiol, yn gyfoes ac yn addas i Squirrels pedair i chwech oed – gan ddefnyddio iaith y gall plant ifanc ei deall, ei llefaru ac, yn bwysicaf oll, mwynhau ei chanu.

Branwen oedd y person perffaith i ymgymryd â’r her. Yn ogystal â bod yn gerddor medrus, mae ganddi brofiad helaeth o weithio gyda chaneuon plant ar gyfer S4C, ymhlith ei thalentau niferus. Mae hi’n deall nid yn unig sut i gyfieithu geiriau, ond sut i wneud i’r Gymraeg weithio i leisiau ifanc wrth gadw rhythm, ystyr a hwyl cân.

Diolch enfawr i Branwen am ddod â’r caneuon hyn yn fyw i’n Squirrels.

Hoffem hefyd ddiolch i Scouts UK am ariannu’r cyfieithiad gwreiddiol a’n helpu i wneud y Gymraeg yn fwy gweladwy a hygyrch i Sgowtio yng Nghymru.

Dyma’r amser perffaith i lansio’r llyfr caneuon.

Mae’r Squirrels yn dathlu eu pumed pen-blwydd ar 9 Medi, bum mlynedd ar ôl i’r adran gael ei lansio’n swyddogol yn 2021. Ers hynny, mae’r Squirrels wedi rhoi cyfle i blant pedair i chwech oed ymuno â’r Scouts, gwneud ffrindiau, rhoi cynnig ar bethau newydd a dechrau datblygu sgiliau am oes.

Nawr mae gan ein Squirrels yng Nghymru 11 rheswm arall i ddechrau canu yn y Gymraeg.

Gobeithiwn y bydd y llyfr caneuon yn dod â digon o hwyl, cerddoriaeth a hyder i Nythod ledled Cymru – boed y Gymraeg yn iaith y mae eich Squirrels yn ei defnyddio bob dydd neu eu bod nhw newydd ddechrau ei darganfod.

Felly lawrlwythwch y llyfr caneuon, dewiswch gân a rhowch gynnig arni.

A dangoswch i ni sut hwyl rydych chi’n ei gael arni! Os ydych chi’n recordio’ch Squirrels yn canu, yn wiglo, yn neidio neu’n cael amser gwych gyda’r caneuon, tagiwch @ScoutsCymru ar y cyfryngau cymdeithasol fel y gallwn ni weld – a chlywed – Squirrels ledled Cymru yn ymuno yn yr hwyl.

Pen-blwydd hapus, Squirrels – codwch y to!

For the first time, we’re launching Llyfr Caneuon y Squirrels – The Squirrels Songbook in Welsh, featuring 11 songs for Squirrels to sing, move and have fun to together.

From Squirrels yn Wiglo and Squirrels Bychan to Gwna dy Orau Glas, Y Gân Neidio and Cân Diolch, the songs capture everything that makes being a Squirrel so much fun – making friends, helping others, belonging, playing, exploring and, eventually, moving on to the next adventure with Beavers.

But this project has been about much more than simply translating English words into Welsh.

The original words and music were written by Chris James, with Branwen Gwyn creating the new Welsh-language adaptation. Branwen has carefully reworked the songs so that the Welsh is natural, contemporary and age appropriate for Squirrels aged four to six – using language that young children can understand, say and, most importantly, enjoy singing.

Branwen was the perfect person to take on the challenge. As well as being an accomplished musician herself, she has extensive experience working with Welsh-language children’s songs for the BBC and S4C, among her many talents. She understands not just how to translate words, but how to make Welsh work for young voices while keeping the rhythm, meaning and fun of a song.

A huge diolch to Branwen for bringing these songs to life for our Squirrels.

We’d also like to thank Scouts UK for funding the original translation and helping us make Welsh more visible and accessible across Scouting in Wales.

And we couldn’t think of a better time to launch the songbook.

Squirrels celebrate their fifth birthday on 9 September, five years after the section was officially launched in 2021. Since then, Squirrels has given four-to-six-year-olds the opportunity to join Scouts, make friends, try new things and start developing skills for life.

Now our Squirrels in Wales have 11 more reasons to get singing in Welsh.

We hope the songbook will bring plenty of fun, music and confidence to Dreys across Wales – whether Welsh is the language your Squirrels use every day or they are just beginning to discover it.

So download the songbook, choose a song and give it a go.

And please show us how you get on! If you record your Squirrels singing, wiggling, jumping or generally having a brilliant time with the songs, tag @ScoutsCymru on social media so we can see – and hear – Squirrels across Wales joining in.

Pen-blwydd hapus, Squirrels – now let’s hear you!

‘Mae cymaint o Squirrels ledled y DU yn defnyddio canu i ddweud helo, hwyl fawr a sbarduno anturiaethau newydd gyda’i gilydd. Bydd cael y caneuon hyn mewn llyfr caneuon Cymraeg yn rhoi hyder i hyd yn oed mwy o bobl ifanc ymuno, mwynhau cerddoriaeth a theimlo’n rhan o’r foment. Gyda’r Gymraeg yn dod yn rhan gynyddol o’n cymunedau, mae rhannu’r caneuon hyn yn y Gymraeg yn golygu y gall mwy o Squirrels gymryd rhan, teimlo eu bod yn cael eu cynnwys a mwynhau canu fel nyth.

Rydym ni eisiau i bob Squirrel yng Nghymru deimlo bod y Gymraeg yn rhywbeth y gallant ei mwynhau a chael hwyl â hi, p’un a ydynt yn ei siarad bob dydd neu newydd ddechrau dysgu. Mae’r caneuon wedi’u cyfieithu a’u llunio’n feddylgar fel eu bod yn llifo’n naturiol yn y Gymraeg, gan helpu arweinwyr i deimlo’n hyderus wrth eu defnyddio a rhoi cyfle i bobl ifanc glywed a defnyddio’r iaith mewn ffordd chwareus a chadarnhaol.

Alla i ddim aros i glywed Squirrels ledled Cymru yn eu canu – a pha ffordd well o ddathlu pen-blwydd y Squirrels yn bump oed!’

Dywedodd Molly Reed, Aelod o Dîm Rhaglen - Squirrels

‘So many Squirrel Dreys across the UK use singing to say hello, goodbye and spark new adventures together. Having these songs available through a Welsh song book will give even more young people the confidence to join in, explore music and feel part of the moment. With Welsh becoming an ever‑growing part of our communities, sharing these songs in Welsh means more Squirrels can take part, feel included and enjoy singing as a drey.

We want every Squirrel in Wales to feel that Welsh is something they can enjoy and have fun with, whether they speak it every day or are just beginning to learn. The songs have been thoughtfully translated and shaped so they flow naturally in Welsh, helping leaders feel confident using them and giving young people a chance to hear and use the language in a playful, positive way.

I can’t wait to hear Dreys across Wales singing them – and what better way to celebrate Squirrels turning five!’
