At ScoutsCymru, we are committed to ensuring Scouting in Wales is an inclusive movement. We want to provide young people in Wales with the opportunity to enjoy fun and adventure while developing the skills they need to succeed, now and in the future.
Scouting is open to all young people in Wales regardless of faith, gender, sexual orientation, race, or social background, we encourage our members to do more, learn more and be more.
To uphold this, we have put together a team of likeminded people who have a real passion for Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion. Our EDI sub-committee is here to work towards making a difference for all our young people.
We wanted to introduce you to the team and give you an insight into the work they will be doing.
First up we have EDI Chair, Edwards Watts MBE DL.
Edward has been a member of Scouting for over 50 years and was awarded in The Queens New Year’s Honours MBE for services to Scouting, Mission to Seafarers and Community Cohesion in South Wales.
Amongst the many other roles he has had and still holds, he was also in the National Police Chief Constable Committee Race Religion and Beliefs, he has been a director of the South East Wales Racial Partnership Board and set up the Black and Multi Ethnic Partnership Board.
Why did you want to become a part of the group?
I wanted to become a part of the EDI Sub-committee to use my life experiences to help build a more inclusive ScoutsCymru.
What are the main goals of the group?
Our main goals are to respect one another and work towards building a safe space for everyone. We really want to promote an all-inclusive Wales.
Why do you think the work of the group is important?
Our work is important as we want to be a source of support and guidance. We want to act as a sounding board to ensure that we are treated equally immaterial of race, religion, colour, or any other characteristic.
What do you hope the group will accomplish within the next year?
I hope that we will start to create a path that we can all travel along together towards a better future.
