ScoutsCymru’s Board of Trustees is an integral part of delivering Scouting in Wales. The Trustees are responsible for the governance of the organisation, setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring it is effectively and properly run with legal and other obligations met. The Board also ensures that ScoutsCymru’s business plans align with its priorities and the delivery of the ‘skills for life’ strategy, which supports both young people and volunteers with their personal development, empowering them to make a positive contribution to Welsh society.
This autumn, the Board of Trustees is seeking SIX new elected members to join the Board. Nominations for these positions are now open and must be received no later than 12 noon on Friday 4 October 2024.
This year, there will be elections for six positions on the Board of Trustees as follows:
• One trustee from South Wales (Gwent, Cardiff and Vale, Mid Glamorgan)
• One trustee from North Wales (Clwyd, Eryri a Môn, Montgomeryshire)
• Four elected 18-24 trustees (from any area of Wales)
Previous trustee experience is not required – we will provide training, support and guidance. But you will need to be able to think strategically and be prepared to ask challenging and meaningful questions of senior volunteers and staff, and to be able to give the time needed.
We want a diverse Board of Trustees which reflects communities across Wales and encourages a diversity of thought and experience across our organisation. As such we are keen to hear from people from a range of backgrounds and experiences who share our values and want to make a difference. We are particularly, though not exclusively, interested in applications from women, people from minority ethnic groups, disabled people and LGTBQ+ people.
If you’re considering standing for election as a trustee, it’s likely you’ll have lots of questions about what the role involves and whether it is suitable for you. With this in mind, we have three online open briefing sessions, where you’ll get the chance to meet the Chair and Youth Lead to hear more about the positions and answer any questions you may have. There’s no obligation to stand once you’ve attended one of these meetings, but we hope you’ll leave the meeting feeling that being a trustee is an opportunity for anyone with the passion and enthusiasm to ensure Scouting in Wales is the best it can be.
There are three Eventbrite open sessions taking place as follows:
If none of these sessions are convenient, please email us on admin@scoutscymru.org.uk and we’d be delighted to answer any of your questions or to arrange a time for an informal chat so you can find out more about being a ScoutsCymru trustee.
You can also read more about being a trustee and see a full description of what the role involves here.
If you need support identifying a possible proposer or seconder for your nomination, please contact us at admin@scoutscymru.org.uk
Any position where more than one person has been nominated will require a vote by members of the Council of ScoutsCymru. This is a group of elected representatives and senior volunteers from across Wales that hold the Chief Volunteer, Chair and Trustees of the Board to account. Voting details will be sent to members of the Council by Tuesday 15 October 2024 and the results will be announced at the Annual General Meeting.
