A refreshed Rights Challenge Badge has been relaunched through a three-way partnership between ScoutsCymru, Girlguiding Cymru and the Children’s Commissioner for Wales, giving children and young people across Wales a renewed opportunity to learn about their rights – and how to use them.
Originally developed to support learning about the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), the badge has now been updated with new activities, age-appropriate content, and a fresh look. The updated pack has activities designed to help young people explore what rights are, why they matter, and what to do if they feel those rights aren’t being respected.
“Every child and young person in Wales has rights – to be safe, to be heard, to be treated fairly, and knowing about those rights is crucial for children and young people. That’s why I’m so pleased to see Scouts Cymru and Gilrlguiding Cymru offering these fantastic and important new rights badges. It’s a brilliant way to help young people understand their rights, and importantly, what to do if they feel they aren’t getting their rights.”
“We’re delighted to have worked alongside ScoutsCymru and the Children’s Commissioner for Wales on this important refresh of the Rights Challenge Badge. Helping girls and young women understand their rights – and how to stand up for themselves and others – is a vital part of what we do. The new activities are fun, thoughtful and age-appropriate, and we’re proud to have led the design of the updated pack.”
The Rights Challenge Badge has been designed to grow with the young person, offering age-appropriate activities for every section across Scouting and Girlguiding. Younger age groups can explore the difference between wants and needs through interactive games, while those a little older take part in quizzes to learn more about what is – and isn’t – considered a right. As they progress, young people develop a deeper understanding of rights as things they should have, not just need, and older participants begin to explore how these rights apply in real life – and how they can speak up or take action when rights are not respected.
The Children’s Commissioner for Wales is an independent children’s human rights institution, championing the rights and wellbeing of every child in Wales. ScoutsCymru’s collaboration with the Commissioner highlights its commitment to creating safe, inclusive spaces where young people can grow, thrive and be heard.
Did you know, Wales was the first part of the UK to embed the UNCRC into law – recognising all 42 rights children have to grow up happy, healthy and safe?
The Rights Challenge Badge is a practical, engaging way to bring these rights to life.
“Scouting helps young people develop skills for life – and knowing your rights is one of the most powerful tools a young person can have. We’re proud to have worked in partnership to create this badge, which we hope will spark vital conversations and lasting confidence in every young person who takes part.”
