Congratulations to Edward Watts, a Scouting volunteer with almost 45 years of service, who has been presented with his Silver Wolf award.
The prestigious award is the highest accolade an adult volunteer in Scouting can receive and is awarded for services of the most exceptional nature.
Edward, who lives in Newport, was presented with his award in December at the Gwent Scouts Area Carol Service by ScoutsCymru’s Chief Volunteer Rhian Moore.
Edward was nominated for the award by Chris Lee – who until recently was Vice Chair of the ScoutsCymru Board of Trustees – in recognition of almost 45 years of “experience, commitment, consistent exceptional service and value of contribution to Scouting”.
A familiar face for many in Scouting, Edward is the Area Chair for Gwent Scouts and has held various trustee roles on the ScoutsCymru Board. Edward started as a Group Venture Scout leader (now known as Explorer Scouts) with 29th Newport and still has close links with the group.
Chris said: “Edward has always given his full commitment to Scouting, he always makes time to mentor, advise and get involved in discussions, debates and peer support to push leadership development forward with senior leadership.
“His drive, enthusiasm, energy and achievements have earned him respect and recognition throughout Wales and beyond. Edward is a trusted voice that brings back insight from his work with other organisations that helps us navigate the opportunities in Wales.”
He added: “I personally believe that Edward’s experience, commitment, consistent exceptional service and value of contribution to Scouting make him a worthy recipient of this prestigious honour.”
It’s not just Scouting which benefits from Edward’s experience and passion. He is also a governor of a school in Newport; has been involved with the Newport Mission to Seafarers for over 50 years and has held the position of Chair for more than 20 years; is Chair of Gwent Association of Voluntary Organisations (GAVO); and a Trustee of the Wales Council for Voluntary Action (WCVA).
Edward has been recognised locally for his commitment to the third sector, having been awarded an MBE, and appointed as Deputy Lieutenant of Gwent, two honours which have provided him with additional network opportunities to promote the work of the third sector at every opportunity.
Rhian Moore, Chief Volunteer for ScoutsCymru, said when presenting the award: “It is my absolute honour to congratulate my friend and trustee Edward on receiving the prestigious Silver Wolf Scout Award. This recognition is a testament to your unwavering commitment, remarkable dedication, and countless contributions to Scouting. You have embodied the true spirit of service, inspiring young people and volunteers alike with your leadership, compassion, and determination to make a lasting difference.”
She added: “Your tireless efforts have not only strengthened our Scouting community in Wales but have also left an indelible mark on the lives of so many. This award is a reflection of the profound respect and gratitude we all hold for you. On behalf of everyone whose lives you’ve touched, thank you for your incredible service—and congratulations on this well-deserved achievement.”
Edward said: “It’s been an honour to work with so many dedicated people over the years through Scouting and to see the actions of the young people who have made their lives better as well as the lives of others.”
