ScoutsCymru is delighted to be sponsoring the Diversity in Education Zone at the second annual Mastering Diversity Conference and Exhibition.

The free event – which takes place at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium on Monday 16 September – will inspire and drive discussions around diversity, equity, and inclusion in industry, education, health and other sectors in Wales.

Organised by award-winning diversity and inclusion expert Bernie Davies, and with an opening address from the Hon Vaughan Gething, the former First Minister of Wales, the event will explore how Wales can become more inclusive and diverse, celebrating innovative approaches and best practices to create an inclusive Wales.

Delegates will take part in a range of themed workshops and sessions to inspire discussions around diversity, equity, and inclusion across various sectors in Wales, such as sports, business and education, with each zone taking place in one of the stadium’s corporate hospitality boxes.

As sponsor of the Diversity in Education Zone, ScoutsCymru will lead the discussion on diversity within learning, alongside colleagues from adventure-based learning charity The Outward Bound Trust; More Than Flags and Rainbows, a not-for-profit organisation that works with schools, trusts, local authorities and charities on inclusive approaches; and Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic Educators (BAMEed) Cymru, which campaigns for an education sector that is reflective of society.

The session will explore how we can create a more inclusive Wales for young people when it comes to schools and other learning environments. We’ll look at how we can ensure learning is inclusive to all, including learners whose diversity is not visible, as well as exploring ‘nature as a classroom’ and how to make outdoor learning fully inclusive.

Every child must have the equal opportunity to experience the benefits of learning

Kerrie Gemmill, Director of ScoutsCymru, explained that the event is suitable for anyone who is involved in the learning journey of young people.

She said: “We warmly welcome people who work in schools and the traditional education sector – but we extend that invite to anyone involved in the learning journey. That includes youth workers, play workers, volunteers in the youth sector, those who work in outdoor education and anyone else who would find it beneficial.

“We will ask how we can make learning more inclusive, ensuring that every child has the equal opportunity to experience the benefits of learning.”

She added: “We will create opportunities to learn, listen and contribute to a more inclusive learning experience across the whole learning journey of a young person, whether that’s school, extra curricular activities or higher education.

“We want people to come to a session, learn something, hear great ideas, share their experiences, and contribute to discussions on how we can do it better. We want people leave with ideas they can take away, and to connect with people they can contact later and discuss ideas in more detail.”

She added: “We don’t want to just issue a list of barriers and issues. We want to think of the solutions. We know we can do better and that’s why we are bringing together different industries and sectors to highlight good practice, innovation and to discuss how we can improve diversity and inclusion across different sectors.”

High profile key speakers will share experiences

Key speakers on the day who will share their experiences include rugby legend Glenn Webbe (Wales’s first black rugby player), Andrew Jenkins of BBC’s Traitors, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson DBE, sharing her journey and perspectives from her career as a Paralympian and crossbench peer, and multi-award winning period dignity campaigner, Molly Fenton, and an empowering narrative on dyslexia as a superpower to win multi-million-pound contracts by Toni Clarkstone of Toni Clarkstone Global Ltd.

The celebration continues with the Diversity and Inclusion Awards on October 16 at the Senedd, where outstanding contributions to diversity in Wales will be honoured. ScoutsCymru is delighted to be sponsoring the Diversity in Education Award and discovering more individuals and organisations who are championing diversity among learners in Wales.
