The ScoutsCymru Trustee Board met last weekend to discuss and approve the annual business plans and budgets for the year ahead.

This is the first trustee meeting since the appointment of Kirsty Palmer as Chair in February and comes as Scout Trustee Boards across the UK begin to adapt in line with good charity governance procedures, a priority strand of Transformation, the process of change within the Scouting movement.

The Trustee Board is responsible for the governance of ScoutsCymru, setting the strategic direction of the charity and ensuring it is effectively and properly run with legal and other obligations met, and that the business plans align with our priorities and the delivery of the skills for life strategy.

The board of 11 volunteer trustees currently includes two young members – Callum Jones, who is also the current Youth Lead Volunteer, and Georgia Murray who is also Youth Lead Bridgend – to ensure the voices of young people are heard at all levels of Scouting in line with our ‘Youth Shaped’ approach. Billy Calladine, Youth Lead Torfaen, also attended as an observer, to learn more about being a youth representative on the Board. This is a new approach from ScoutsCymru, to give potential new trustees the opportunity to experience a charity board meeting, meet the trustees and ask questions, ahead of committing to the role.

The Trustee Board is actively looking for more young trustees, aged 18 to 25, to join them. If you’d like more information about what being a young trustee entails, email admin@scoutscymru.org.uk and we’d be delighted to have a no-obligation chat with you.

The meeting, which took place at ScoutsCymru’s headquarters in Caerphilly, also saw trustee Nigel Steward presented with the Wood Badge by Rhian Moore, Chief Volunteer. The Wood Badge is the internationally recognised Scouting training insignia awarded to adults on completion of the training required for their role.

The full board of trustees is as follows: Kirsty Palmer – Chair; Chris Lee – Vice Chair; Edward Watts – Vice Chair; Dom Winfield – treasurer; Mark Brett; Stuart Turton; Sam Williams; Rhian Moore (also Chief Volunteer); Callum Jones (also Youth Lead); Nigel Steward (also People Team Member Adult Support) Georgia Murray (also Youth Lead Bridgend).

ScoutsCymru would like to thank them all for their commitment and dedication to ensuring the smooth governance of the movement in Wales.

We’d also like to remind all Trustee Boards that at your next Annual General Meeting (AGM), after 1 April, the membership of your Trustee Board will change. Later this month, Scouts UK will share an updated version of POR featuring the changes, but in the meantime, you can familiarise yourself with them on the Moving to Trustee Boards webpage. You’ll also find updated resources to support the change, including guidance on running an open selection process and how to prepare for an AGM.
