Pete, 14 to 24 Team Lead, Cardiff East

Pete is a volunteer in the Cardiff East district of Cardiff and the Vale. At the age of just 21 Pete led a patrol as part of a Scouting trip to the Netherlands. Pete also volunteers at the All Wales events, such as All Wales Scout Camp and All Wales Cub Fun Day. He often has a camera in his hand and leads the  event photography.

From Cub Scout to leader

Pete joined Scouting as a Cub Scout at 1st St Mellons in Cardiff and has never left. He worked his way through Scouts and Explorers before becoming a leader at just 18. Pete also supports the All Wales events combining his passion of Scouting and skills in photography to capture and promote the events.

Providing direction to Explorer units in Cardiff East

Pete has many volunteer roles and responsibilities in the Scouts. He currently supports all the Explorer units across Cardiff East, making sure training is up to date, the programme is high quality with a range of activities. Pete also leads the units to work together on large scale events and activities. When Pete isn’t working with the Explorers in Cardiff East, he works with the All Wales events team as the main photographer capturing content from the events.

Growing and developing young people in Cardiff

Pete has the privilege of working with many young people. He explains, “Seeing the young people progress through the movement gaining the skills they need and seeing them grow, is what really hits me.”, Pete enjoys seeing young people progress into helping at Scout events using skills they learnt in Scout and Explorer sessions. He says, “Seeing the full journey of the young people is truly inspiring.”

Providing life changing opportunities

Within Scouting we provide a whole range of opportunities to our young people. From visits abroad to visiting the local fire station, from climbing mountains to supporting our communities. Pete says, “Giving our young people experiences that they wouldn’t get anywhere else, for relatively little cost is something that keeps me motivated.”  Through these opportunities we get to watch their skills develop and grow. These are skills that will last them a lifetime as they grow from young people to adults and hopefully volunteers within the Scouts.

Volunteering with Scouts will expose you to new opportunities

Pete has had many different experiences during his volunteer career. “There is always something in Scouts to get you started,” he says, “It’s not all about working with the young people, there’s plenty of background and support roles too. Scouting gives you experiences like trips to Holland or attending an event with 2,000 people in mid Wales. Within Scouting you can learn so much from everyone and will leave more knowledgeable than when you walked in.”

Get involved with Scouts. Whether you’re supplying a skill, background support or taking the lead, there’s something for everyone.
