Leaders in Wales of all sections from Squirrels to Explorers are invited to a free online session which will give you everything you need to know to run the ScoutsCymru Democracy Challenge Badge.

The Democracy Challenge Badge – which was developed with the Electoral Commission Wales – encourages Scouts of all ages, from four to 18, to learn more about decision making, to understand that their opinion matters, and to become active citizens in their community.

We’re thrilled to now be working with The Politics Project to provide a series of free training sessions where leaders can find out more about the badge and gain the tools needed to deliver the badge to their young people.

The 90-minute interactive session will be filled with practical advice on integrating democracy into your meetings as well as ideas for activities to help young people meet the requirements of the badge.

You’ll get:

  • An overview of how democracy works in Wales and the UK.
  • Practical ways to integrate democracy into your meetings.
  • Advice for organising meetings with local politicians and decision-makers.
  • Guidance on facilitating non-partisan political discussions.
  • Ideas for activities which will help young people meet the requirements of the badge, from Squirrels to Explorers.

The training will help leaders become more confident in delivering the badge activities, as well as discussing politics and democracy with young people in general.

The online training, which is suitable for leaders of all Scouting sections, takes place on the following dates. Click on the relevant link to book your free space.

Kerrie Gemmill, Director of ScoutsCymru said: “ScoutsCymru is committed to ensuring all young people know that their voice matters and to encourage them to become active citizens who engage in democracy, soon to be very relevant in the run up to the Welsh elections in 2026. We are very grateful to The Politics Project for putting together this fun and interactive session so that leaders across Wales can confidently deliver the Democracy Challenge Badge.”

This month has seen the launch of the badge for Squirrels, meaning our youngest section aged 4 to 6 can now earn the Democracy Challenge Award for the first time.

As well as the training sessions for leaders, young people aged 14 to 18 can find out what it’s like to be a Member of Senedd and have their say on their issues that matter to them in our very first Model Senedd. Plus we have funding available so that groups can plan activities and events so that young people aged 14 to 18 can earn the Democracy Challenge Badge.
